Overview

Itinerary

Starting in Cartagena, take a private van to San Basilio de Palenque, a vibrant Afro-Colombian community with a powerful story—it was the first free town in the Americas. During this experience, you'll explore its rich culture, history, music, and food.

Upon arrival, a local guide will welcome you and explain how the experience will unfold. You'll connect with the community and explore the local museum, where you'll learn about Palenque’s roots and history;
make a street food stop to taste Caribbean-style traditional bites
enjoy a home-cooked lunch featuring ancestral Palenquero cooking techniques
experience live music from youth bands mixing modern beats with traditional rhythms, along with dance performances showcasing styles like mapalé
visit a medicinal herb garden to discover traditional healing practices
and visit  the main square, where the history brings Benkos Biohó to life we will share how Palenque was founded as a place of freedom and resistance and the history of this Man.

This journey is a genuine way to connect with a community that proudly preserves its roots, spirit, and joyful way of life. Cartagena Insider was the first operator to visit Palenque. Today, the town finally enjoys the visibility it has always deserved.

Our experiences at Cartagena Insider always include a donation to Femcolombia, a non-profit organization that has supported Afro-descendant and Indigenous communities in their fight for land rights for years.
